Opposite the town of Barra de Valizas, the Atlantic Ocean offers you 3 km of fine and white sand beach, with moderate waves, framed by immense dunes and a stream that connects periodically with the sea to the south.
The waves of Barra de Valizas beach are very good for surfing, but the most popular sport is sandboarding that takes place in the dunes that reach 40 meters high. The fans of this sport find there a paradise for sandboarding, especially in the huge dune called El Gran Vali.
During the summer months the beach has a lifeguard service, WiFi, restaurants that overlook the sea and sports activities that you can see in our calendar of events.
Activities on the beach
Barra de Valizas beach is the starting point for two great walks, one of 7 kilometers to the north towards Aguas Dulces and the other in the opposite direction, to the south, to Cerro de la Buena Vista, crossing the Arroyo de Valizas, that ,depending on its conditions, can be crossed walking or by boats taken on the site.
Cerro de la Buena Vista is the highest peak of the Uruguayan coast, its summit offers a spectacular panoramic view of the town, the zigzagging stream, the laguna de Castillos that feeds it, the islands of Castillo Grande and the ocean.
The most adventurous ones start from there a journey of about 6 kilometers to Cabo Polonio, where you will find only sky, sand, sea and much peace. It is recommended to go with little luggage, good footwear, water reserves and use sunscreen.
Also, during all the year, different horseback rides are realized: until the Cerro de la Buena Vista, at night in the light of the Full Moon by the beach or even horseback riding of several days.
In February, a classic "correcaminata" takes place from Barra de Valizas, crossing its beach to Aguas Dulces.
