Lighthouses

Lighthouses

The lighthouses of Uruguay have been part of the history of our country and treasure hundreds of myths and legends that fascinate not only sailors but also many of those who have never had the sea as a dwelling. In the department of Rocha we have two lighthouses, in La Paloma and in Cabo Polonio.

The Cabo Santa María Lighthouse, in La Paloma, was inaugurated in 1874, after a first construction attempt in 1872 that was destroyed by a heavy storm.

The Lighthouse of Cabo Polonio, was built in 1881, as a result of the innumerable shipwrecks in the area, among them the one of a Spanish ship called "Polonio", to which this seaside resort owes its name.

We invite you to visit these historic and important attractions that will immerse you in a world of legends about pirates, treasures and great boats.
